Census Spreadsheet Download Instructions

The following is a detailed list of instructions to download, extract and open my spreadsheet files.

1.  At my download page, enter your name and e-mail address and select the desired spreadsheet from the dropdown list.

2.  Click the "download it" button.

3. The following window will open.

4.  Ensure "save this program to disk" is selected and press "OK".  The following window will open.

5.  You can change the saving location on your hard drive to your preference and then press "save".

6.  The file will download to the location you specified.  Be sure to remember where it is.

7.  Open Windows Explorer and find the file you downloaded at the location you specified.  Double click the file and the following window will appear.

8.  The file is ready to self-extract the spreadsheet file to whatever hard drive location you specify.  By default the file will self-extract to c:\windows\temp but you can change that location by clicking the "browse" button and selecting a new location.  Just be sure to remember where it is.  When you have the destination folder selected click the "unzip" button.  The following window will appear.

9.  Click "OK" and then close the "WinZip Self-Extractor" window.

10.  Open Microsoft Excel, click "file" in the top menu bar and select "open".  Find the spreadsheet file which you extracted in step 9.  The 1790-1920 federal spreadsheet is named "census.xls", Census Tracker is named "tracker.xls" and the Canadian spreadsheet is named "canada.xls".  When you have found the file, press the "open" button.  The spreadsheet file will open.
